Black vs White pg 81

Throughout Invisible man Ellision focuses on the motif of wheels. He uses the Roulette wheel in particularly to signify the future and change, "The world moves in a circle like a roulette wheel". This metaphor is used to describe how as time and life moves on the world alternates between divisions. On one hand, for the invisible man the wheel is used to foreshadow how he himself will go through changes as time progresses, while, In the big picture the alternating aspect of the wheel foreshadows repetition of the past. Ellision then furthers his connection by describing each of the wheel's divisions, "In the beginning, black is on top, in the middle epochs, white holds the odds". Each division is representative of the dominate race of the world. While in this "epoch" or time period the white race is dominate the tables could easily turn by a simple spin of the wheel. Both the individual and society are approaching the climax of a portion of their existence and are about to switch into a new segment. This idea is enforced by the statement, "soon Ethiopia shall stretch forth her noble wings!". Ellision is addressing the Ethiopian religious movement during the 19th century. In this movement denominations broke free of the white control in South Africa. For the society, as each division alternates on the constantly rotating wheel, it is possible for the odds to roll upon this movement again for the past to repeat itself. For the invisible man, this allusion can be directed in the idea that he has to go against society in order to find the truth. As time draws near to the switching of divisions the odds of the whites being able to maintain their rule over the society and the individual are depleting therefore we should "place our money on the black!".

  1. 7-great quote choice and your analysis and connection are solid. The reason this gets a 7 is construction. Work on language and sentence structure as well as clarity in organization. Also, the context needs to clearly stated and explored within the quote itself.
