In this section, the Invisible Man undergoes a rebirth.
After the accident in the factory, the narrator is taken to the factory
hospital where he is tested through a lobotomy. He is unsure who he is, where
he comes from, and even his name. As he is walking the streets to go back to
the Men’s House, a woman named Mary takes him because of his sick looking
condition. Mary represents a motherly figure towards the narrator, this we can
infer because of her name (referring to the Virgin Mary). While living with
Mary, the Invisible Man struggles with who he is and what he is supposed to do
with his life. He states, “The obsession with my identity which I had developed
in the factory hospital returned with vengeance. Who was I, how had I come to
be?” (259). This scene represents the point in the narrator’s journey that he
decides to search for himself and his purpose. After his rebirth, he strives to
find a sense of himself and what he should do. In a sense, this marks a new beginning
for the narrator to start on his journey and delve into finding himself.
6- very close to a 7-what was needed was the extension to his understanding of what stage he is at on this journey. Or, your understanding of this if you think the narrator does not know.
