Light vs. Darkness Week 3

In the beginning of Chapter 11, the narrator experiences a “rebirth” in which he is allowed to now regenerate his life. This is an opportunity for him to start over and live differently than he has been living. As soon as he wakes up, the first thing he sees is a face that has “moved in and out of the circle of lights, peering for a moment…” (233). The light in this case represents clarity, as the invisible points out, everything “was coming clear” (233). As soon as the narrator comes into contact with the light, he starts to realize where he is. The exuviation of the light allows the man to experience reality as though he “had just begun to live” (233). It allowed him to feel a sense of ease and he overcame his sense of fear and confusion when he got a glimpse of the lights. This scene signifies the transformation of the man to a new beginning and a new stage in his life where he can decide how he wants to live and do what he wishes to do. The light portrayed here has a very positive connotation as it represents certainty as he emerges out of the darkness of confusion and obscurity.
