Power
In Chapter 13, the narrator witnesses an eviction take place for an old Black couple, that reminds him of his own grandparents. The police man are throwing out their beloved items, even refusing to let the woman pray in her own house hold. The narrator is very upset to see such a horrendous act occurring upon his fellow people, mentioning how "his eyes burning and his throat tightening" (270) The crowd watching the eviction is protesting but the white policeman simply state they are "following orders and wasting his time." (274) The invisible man is infuriated that the whites can take away everything these helpless families. "So we've been dispossessed of everything, and whats more, he thinks he's God." the narrator says referring to the 'lawmakers.' The white supremacy complex throughout the novel is especially noticeable in this scene as well as their unfair power over the blacks.
