The invisible man takes a journey walking from Ms.Mary’s house, which he had stayed at temporarily after Ms.Mary graciously took him in to her home. She saw he was ill on the subway and offered to take care of him. He then walks to the Mens house where he is currently living, after turning down Ms.Mary’s offer for him to live with her. The conversation the IM has with himself while seeing the men in the lobby of the house is the first real moment that it is overtly obvious that the IM has gone through transformation “ a rebirth” of some sort in the hospital. The IM while taking this journey by the mens house says that he “ was overcome by a sense of alienation and hostility”( 198). As the IM begins to realize the absurdity of the men there in the lobby talking, he begins to discuss different characters he sees in the lobby, each with a believed purpose for themselves but with something missing. “ college boys.. with no school down south” “preachers ordained by no authority” “community leaders with no followers”( 198). The IM now after being reborn sees these people beyond the “veil” or “mask” that can create an allusion between what they seem to be and what they actually are. The IM is on a journey when we reaches the Mens house and realizes these facts, while he is also on a personal journey, where after being reborn he has the capacity to see these people for who they truly are. This journey is evidence of how much the IM has already begun to change, and a foreshadowing of how much is yet to come.
